I built this giant American Flag with a lot of help from friends and family between 2006-2010. Primarily, I brought the flag to parks; people would play with it, it would rip, and then everyone would work on mending it together. While I was working on the flag project, I thought about the flag as a symbol for the commons. I tried to use the collective repair of this object as a way to think more about how we might make the politic we live in more like the politic we hope to live in.
Abigail Miller and I briefly founded a printing press to publish short textual works in EL wire in the sky.
I like cooking for people and I’m realizing this has become a central creative outlet for me over the past 10 years.

In Judaism, there is a concept called B’tzelem Elohim — that people are created “in Gd’s image”. I like drawing people because sometimes it helps me get very still and focused. I think that trying to see someone is a way of honoring what is holy in people.
I’d like to draw your portrait. Email me at david.mahfouda@gmail.com to set up an appointment.
Sky fishing is a supported spiritual exercise I started practicing in 2009.
In my day-to-day living, I often find myself influenced by contexts and systems of meaning that are ultimately alienating. An example is seeing an employer a source of money.
When Sky Fishing I try to make a vertical appeal — to the vastness of space — and in so doing strip away some of the cultural mediation that can prevent me from encountering what is.
Movement Match is a project I contributed to in the wake of the Trump election. The goal of this matching platform is to connect newly activated progressives to existing activist groups, to further build the strength of the movement. For more information visit movementmatch.org.
